shutter material

So what exactly is the best plantation shutter material? Shutters are a great addition to practically any room in your home. They’re a versatile window covering that offer a host of benefits like increased privacy, improved insulation, a classic look, and an investment that will last for decades. If you’re considering adding shutters to your home, you’ll want to understand the different materials from which you have to choose.

Composite plantation shutters

Composite plantation shutters  material refers to shutters that are made of a faux wood product. They fall in the middle of the shutter price range and offer a similar strength as real wood shutters at a much lower cost. They are sturdy, durable, versatile, resistant to humidity, and very easy to maintain.

Why wood shutters?

Wood shutters material are the traditional material type used in homes and represent the higher end of the price spectrum. They do require a bit more maintenance than composite materials to keep them looking great over time. They don’t offer the water resistant quality of other shutter materials, but they do offer the aesthetic of natural wood window coverings which wows buyers. Wood shutters can be painted to match any color or stain. They can be built wider than poly and composite due to durability and structure.

Considering vinyl shutters

Vinyl shutters are the most affordable shutter option on the market. You’ll also hear them referred to as PVC shutters, or Poly. They are made from vinyl shutter materials and are much less expensive than wood variations. Vinyl shutters are also durable, scratch resistant, and look great with little maintenance.  Vinyl or Poly as we call them here at Indian River Shutter Company, we provide a solid product. A solid product prevents any louvers sagging, and supports a longer life span for the product itself. Vinyl or Poly shutters are also perfect for any shower window, bathroom window, and garage windows, as they are able to get wet for easy cleaning.

How do you choose

Which shutter material you ultimately choose comes down to a few key things. One—your budget might dictate your choice with vinyl shutters on the lowest end of the range and real wood shutters on the high end. How much maintenance you plan to put into caring for your shutters is also important to consider with vinyl requiring the least and wood potentially requiring the most. Lastly, it’s important to consider the room in which you’re having them installed which could dictate the type of shutter material that would work best in the space.
